Abstract: Dumping site can be the solution for the lack of site for development in Malaysia. Nonetheless, it is highly possible for this method to cause danger to human being and environment if it is poorly implemented. Waste soil contains heterogeneous materials which cause the settlement of the soil to be more complex to be determined compared to normal soil. This paper focuses on models that can be used to predict long term soil settlement. The published models that are appropriate for long term settlement are categorized into 4 groups namely soil mechanic based model, empirical model, rheological model and settlement models which incorporate biodegradation. The models are suitable for predicting long-term settlement of waste soil since the models are time dependent. The predictions can be applied for long periods up to 20 to 30 years.
