Abstract: Intensive research at improving the strength of mortar due to the boundless impairment in construction has led to the exploration of a novel and environmental friendly approach by different research groups. The microbial induced calcite precipitation by ureolytic bacteria have recently appeared as an encouraging binder to repair and consolidate various building materials. This article reviews the basic mechanism of ureolytic bacteria from the genus Bacillus and their function to precipitate calcium carbonate. Furthermore, a review on the effectiveness of calcite precipitation as a substitution of cement at increasing the strength of mortar are presented.
