Strategic Research Roadmap 2021-2025 Institute of Informatics and Computing in Energy (IICE)

Title: Strategic Research Roadmap 2021-2025 Institute of Informatics and Computing in Energy (IICE)
Authors: Hazleen Aris; Halimah Badioze Zaman; Nazrita Ibrahim; Salman Yussof; Moamin A Mahmoud; Wahidah Hashim
Abstract: The Strategic Research Roadmap is generally an important ‘instrument or tool’ to ensure gaps in new research areas are identified and rectified, such that frontier and cutting edge, as well as translational research in the niche research areas are ascertained, can be conducted to solve problems of the field and its application to nation-building and societal well-being. Academic institutions develop strategic roadmaps to ensure that their researchers are guided by some form of research guideline so that research conducted has taken into consideration the university’s strength in terms of the availability of experts in the niche areas selected, availability of facilities to conduct sound frontier, cutting edge and translational research, as well as the funding to support and sustain research in the selected niche areas. Investing in strategic research roadmaps in line with the vision, mission and goals of the university both at the national and global levels has always shown positive results. Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) has over the last decade, formulated two research roadmaps. The first Research Roadmap (2008-2015) was formulated to enhance research culture and inculcate research quality at the university, whilst the second Research Roadmap (2016-2020) was to continue with the previous goal and also, to promote excellence from research discoveries to innovation and commercialisation, to encompass a complete research ecosystem (R, D, I & C) at the university. Both research roadmaps have provided focus and served as a guideline for research planning and resource allocation at UNITEN.

A Basic Guide to Research Methodology

Title: A Basic Guide to Research Methodology
Authors: Amar Hisham Jaaffar; Baharuddin M Hussin; Hassan Mohamed; Juraifa Jais; Mohd Rizuan Abdul Kadir; Nadia Tan Mei Lin; Norashidah Md. Din; Nor'ashikin Ali; Rabiah Eladwiah Abdul Rahim; Renuga Verayiah; Umi Kalsom Masrom
Abstract: Conducting research can be a daunting task for a beginner. This book is an outcome of a team effort by instructors from various disciplines at Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia that have experience in teaching Research Methodology courses in a move to make the basic knowledge available to those pursuing research work at universities and industries. This book provides an understanding of the concepts and techniques of qualitative and quantitative research, information literacy skills, proposal development, etc. It uses simple explanations to demystify complex concepts and methodologies. The content is ideal for those readers with minimal knowledge of research as well as for those readers with intermediate knowledge who need a quick refresher regarding particular aspects of research design and methodology. For those readers with advanced knowledge of research design and methodology, this book can be used as a concise summary of basic research techniques and principles. This book is recommended for undergraduate and postgraduate courses focusing on research methodologies in various disciplines.

Research series in civil engineering: Soft computing applications in hydro-environment

Title: Research series in civil engineering: Soft computing applications in hydro-environment
Authors: Ali Najah Ahmed; Sarmad Dashti Latif; Ahmed El-Shafie
Abstract: In nature, hydrological components such as rainfall, inflow, infiltration and evaporation are required
when attempting to design a water resources system. Hence, studies on the accuracy of these
components for the planning and management of various types of water resources are essential.
However, these components non-linear in nature and most of the conventional models unable to
capture the stochastic nature and the non-linearity of these components. Recently, Artificial Intelligent
(AI) techniques have been widely used in developing non-linear models for solving engineering
problems. This book is focusing on presenting the implementation of Artificial Intelligent (AI)
techniques in optimizing and predicting some of the water resources components such as river flow,
sediment transport and precipitations.
More recently, with the existence of the new generation of soft computing models,
hydrologists and environmentalists switched to advanced models and to artificial intelligence
techniques to tackle the non-linearity and the stochasticity problem associate with water resources.
Therefore, this book is focusing on presenting the implementation of these techniques in optimizing
and predicting some of the water resources components such as river flow, sediment transport and
precipitations. The book consists of four chapters of related studies in hydrological modeling which
will be of direct interest to universities, research institutions, private and public sector institutions,
international organizations and for the water and the associated resources sectors.
Keywords: Hydrological Modeling; Machine Learning; Rainfall Forecasting; Flood Analysis;
Sediment Transport Prediction

Abstract: Ever since the generation of electricity was made possible, the transmission and distribution of electric
power has grown over vast lands and is in itself an amazing feat. This has spurred the growth of
societies and industries the world over. Many of the electric power infrastructures in developing
countries has been commissioned in the middle to the latter half of the 20th century. At the electricity
transmission level, there are concerns about the aging effect on the infrastructure that is comprised of
a network of cables over pylons or transmission towers and on whether that can hold for many more
years.
