Abstract: —Yitria stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) is a typical top coat material for thermal barrier coating (TBC). However, YSZ can only work up to 1200°C due to sintering effect which affect its life time. Researchers have found YSZ replacement in the form of lanthanide zirconate family. However, applying lanthanide zirconate directly will cause a high thermal mismatch and stress because lanthanide zirconate has a relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) in comparison to metal. Therefore, researchers are investigating various multi-layer TBC architectures to overcome this limitation. A five-layer TBC system with intermediate layers of composite coating is found to fulfil the requirement.
