Abstract: The development of expert system, a new information technology derived from artificial intelligent research, in the area of pavement management has been in existence since a few decades ago. It was developed to simulate or reproduce intelligent problem solving behavior in a computer program. The application of expert system for this area is growing rapidly due to reduction in pavement budgets. This paper provide a brief overview of current developments and implementation of expert system in pavement management for both highway and airport networks. Since most of the existing expert system applications are for highway networks, it is a concern of this paper on the potential development of such knowledge-based or expert system for analysis and design of airport pavement rehabilitation strategies. Four important main tasks involved in the activities of pavement management system are also being discussed in this paper. © EuroJournals Publishing, Inc. 2009.
