Non-routine problem-solving and attitudes toward problem-solving among high achievers

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the problem-solving ability and attitudes toward problem-solving among high-achieving secondary school students. The study involved 107 students, 52 males and 55 females. Two instruments were used in this study: an attitude inventory and a nonroutine problem-solving test. Findings indicated that the students' ability to solve problems was good. There were no significant differences between males and females in understanding the problem, planning strategies, executing solution strategies and writing the correct answer. Students also had a positive attitude toward problem-solving.
